If one grew up in the the decade of the 90's, one would know Power Rangers, whether they liked it or not.
In my opinion, Power Rangers was the greatest generational phenomenon of that decade. It was something we all wanted to be as a kid, superheroes. Take an already popular Japanese series, add some American to it, and there you have it. A period in time I will never forget.
Generally (the series), it is about a group of teenagers recruited by a being of a higher status or power. The teenagers are given superhero alter egos and create an ultimate fighting force to combat the great powers of evil in the universe.
It is a great idea for this series to be made into a movie... again. There have already been two Power Ranger movies in the past and they had their strengths and weaknesses but were ultimately made because of the high popularity it was receiving. These movies were still aimed at kids, as it was still holding back on the things that would make it aimed at a more older crowd (greater violence, adult themes, language etc.). As the fans from this time are now adults, I know they would like to see the Power Rangers back on the big screen with a bigger punch.
I wanted to make a movie about Power Rangers for a while. Here goes my pitch of that movie.
First off is the idea. The original American Power Rangers had a inter-dimensional being known as Zordon create the Power Rangers in the city Angel Grove. He is the character I want to focus on as much as the rangers themselves. In the series, the audience only knew Zordon as a floating head inside a giant tube that created the Power Rangers and told them what to do, but in my film interpretation, I want to go deeper into who Zordon is and create more of a back story on him. And through that process, I want him to be seen creating the first group of Power Rangers ever, whom I call the "Origin Rangers". Each series of Power Rangers always had a theme to their looks, such as dinosaurs, being in space, ninjas, rescue teams, time travel, samurai, cars, and the list goes on. I want nothing to do with themes. If there was a theme, it would be the sheer power of Zordon and his morals be presented through the rangers. I see a neutral and powerful look in my version but still maintain the fact that they are Power Rangers just by using the signature color sets of them. Every series has the ranger colors of red, blue, and yellow with between them various other colors such as green, pink, black, white, gold and so on. Since there is no real explanation why the colors red, blue, and yellow are always there, I want the Origin Rangers to be the reason for that, and that being said, I only put three rangers on my interpretation instead of the usual five rangers that fans would probably come to their heads first.
The that will stay the same are these. The generic roles of the Power Rangers. The red ranger would be the leader, the blue ranger would be the athletic genius, and the yellow would be the strong, attractive female. The morphers will be an object that is not so big as shown in the series, and absolutely not in the shape of a cellphone/smartphone but something to be kept at all times but still seems like something normal like a bracelet, ring, necklace, a lucky trinket and etc. The zords would still be there, the robotic fighting machines that each ranger individually controls which ultimately create one single, giant robot known as the megazord. These robots would follow the look of the theme, but since I am removing that from the equation, I would make these three zords be in the form of a humanoid robot.
The technological advancements are a big reason why the movie is great to make right now. Without going too deep, it's obviously a good idea really as the whole series of the Power Ranger saga involves huge robots, science fiction, crazy characters and all of the things that would involve computer graphics, good computer graphics may I add. In the earlier series of Power Rangers, the effects were done with puppets and figures moved to make things transform. There were slight uses of computer effects, such as lasers, explosions, green screen. Now, the series seems to have it all in computer graphics. It is the joy of having something you loved as a kid and have a big place of it in your heart, to be seen as a greatly produces piece of entertainment. It is having something was big just before the digital age and making it look amazing today. Much like the 80's generation of Transformers and the great deal of joy the movies brought them.
I am not sure if I want to make it canon with the series, although I do want it to eventually connect it to the original Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers which would make it canon. I want that to be introduced as a cliffhanger by introducing aspects that would lead to the creation of the command center and introducing Rita Repulsa.
Here is my general, short synopsis of the film leading to a movie about Mighty Morphin'.
We see Zordon, a wandering mystical inter-dimesional sorcerer/wizard encounter various evils throughout the universe and defeat them with his supreme powers and abilities. A universal hero, so to speak. While physically weak, his powers and abilities make up for it. He eventually encounters an evil that he cannot defeat and retreat with his weakened state. He finds himself settling on Earth in a desert of California, making himself a nice resting place in isolation, out of sight from any human. Knowing that the evil that defeated him is wandering in space getting stronger, Zordon finds himself in a predicament, knowing that he physically cannot make do anything, he uses his powers and magically creates the Power Rangers, with the help of three young adults who are up to the task (still need more to these young adults and how Zordon chose them, through awkward dialogue and unbelievable circumstances) They fight, defeat the evil, win and that is the first and last time we see the Origin Rangers. In the weakened state of Zordon was more than great than he thought, he only had enough power for a one time use, they console each other (the rangers and Zordon). Zordon eventually discovers a way to make use of his full power while his physical state be kept in a cylinder-like chamber to be kept alive, literally an out of body experience and thus making him be the floating face we all know. The command center is built with the help of his robot, Alpha-5, he created with his great knowledge. Now, fully aware of what is around him and his capabilities, Zordon finds that the human spirit is a great power in itself by experiencing it through the rangers and also realizes that the Power Rangers are a far greater way to fight evil then by himself. He also discovers a way to use a source of energy/power to make the rangers even stronger, he looks through various way to do so (the themes come into play here, dinosaurs, cars, space, time travel). He starts thinking about his next team by looking at Angel Grove.
I heard once that Jason David Frank (Tommy Oliver, The Green/White Ranger of the original Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers) speaking of the next possible Power Rangers movie to be made like The Dark Knight. I totally understand what he is talking about but have the movie be like TDK? No thanks, that is my opinion anyway, not that there is anything wrong with TDK, just not the type for Power Rangers. I think he just wants another movie about Power Rangers, what a lot of us want.
This is a dream idea I would like to share, my overall story is really all over the place and has many loose ends but it is a start to share where I want my version to go.
